How to Install Windows 11 with a Local Account

Install Windows 11

Windows 11 has introduced several changes to its setup process, one of which includes the requirement to sign in with a Microsoft account. However, if you prefer to use a local account, there is a simple workaround that can help you bypass this requirement. This guide will walk you through the process of setting up Windows 11 with a local account, even if you're stuck at the "Country or Region" selection screen.

Step 1: Access the Command Prompt

When you reach the "Country or Region" selection screen during the Windows 11 setup process, press Shift + F10 on your keyboard.

region or country

A Command Prompt window will appear. This tool allows you to execute commands that can bypass certain setup restrictions.

Step 2: Bypass the Microsoft Account Requirement

In the Command Prompt, type the following command and press Enter:

OOBE\BYPASSNRO

“OOBE” stands for “Out of Box Experience,” which refers to the initial setup and configuration process of a computer's software or hardware. The "BYPASSNRO" part enables you to bypass the Microsoft account requirement.

After executing the command, your PC will restart automatically.

Step 3: Disconnect from the Internet

Once your PC restarts, ensure that it is disconnected from the internet. This step is crucial as the setup process checks for an active internet connection to enforce the Microsoft account requirement. Here’s how you can disconnect:

  • For Ethernet: Simply unplug the Ethernet cable from your PC.
  • For Wi-Fi: Use the following command in the Command Prompt:

ipconfig /release

This command will disable your Wi-Fi connection.

Step 4: Set Up a Local Account

Proceed with the setup process. Without an internet connection, Windows will prompt you to create a local account instead of signing in with a Microsoft account.

Follow the on-screen instructions to configure your local account. You’ll need to provide a username and (optionally) a password.

Step 5: Reconnect to the Internet

After successfully setting up your local account, you can reconnect your PC to the internet. Here’s how:

  • Plug in your Ethernet cable if you’re using a wired connection.
  • or open the Command Prompt and type the following command:

ipconfig /renew

This command will re-establish your connection.

Final Thoughts

By following these steps, you can easily set up Windows 11 with a local account, giving you greater control over your PC without being tied to a Microsoft account. This method is especially useful for users who prioritise privacy or prefer managing their devices offline.

Remember to reconnect to the internet after completing the setup to ensure your device receives necessary updates and security patches.
